Steve King Goes Full Racist – Says Whites Contribute Most To Civilization

When news emerged last week that Iowa Congressman Steve King displays a Confederate flag on his desk in his official office, most had a pretty good idea why. King removed all doubt in an interview today on MSNBC.

The seven-term Congressman from Western Iowa, well-known for often using racially-charged language, joined Chris Hayes for a panel discussion about the Republican convention. They began with King talking about his past support for Ted Cruz, but how the Congressman was encouraged by the people Donald Trump was starting to surround himself with, and how they might influence his thinking on policy.

Then the discussion turned to race. Hayes noted how few people of diverse backgrounds would be addressing the Republican convention. Charles Pierce of Esquire Magazine suggested this would be the last time it would be a nearly all-white speaker lineup for Republicans, and also pointed out how those delegates chanting for Trump today were a bunch of “loud, unhappy, dissatisfied white people.”

King clearly took offense to that.

“This whole white people business does get a little tired, Charlie,” King said. “I mean, I’d ask you to go back through history and figure out where are these contributions made by these other categories of people that you’re talking about. Where did any other subgroup of people contribute more to civilization?”

“Than white people?” Hayes asked.

“Than Western Civilization itself,” King continued. “It’s rooted in Western Europe, Eastern Europe and the United States of America. And every place where the footprint of Christianity settled the world. All of Western civilization.”

After some crosstalk with the other panel members disagreeing forcefully, Hayes brought the conversation to an end.

So, there you have it: Steve King, a leader in the Iowa Republican Party, just said on live TV that he thinks only white Christians made a major impact on civilization. This is the Republican Party of today.

King’s Democratic opponent in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District is Kim Weaver.

  • Contribution by whites!! who stole Black,Indian etc groups, inventions and pass on as they where the inventors.I guess Frederick Douglas lied also.. hmm

    • Steve King reteric is polluted with all that excess fertilizer (shit) the farmers in his district are polluting IOWA’S waterways with.

      • You can talk shit about the Iowa farmer when you show up at my house and say it to may face you coward. I currently live at 2114 W. Sheridan St. in Olathe, KS.

If you would rather meet me in Iowa, I visit my folks farm most weekends. 2156 Vail Ave., Williams, Iowa.

    • You forgot Alexander Gram Bell who stole the telephone blueprints from an Italian immigrant who tried to get his idea patent but when he went back and checked on it later on he was told that they had no records of it and blue prints magically disapeared.

  • I don’t even live in Iowa, never made a campaign contribution before, and I just gave money to Kim Weaver. White conservatives like King are disgustingly regressive and absolutely transparent in their desperate anxiety over the changing demographics in the county. How was this man ever elected, Iowa?

    • He will continue being elected by evangelical zeolites who grab every govt. subsidy under the Sun and refuse to give a meal to a hungry kid.
These are the barons of the toxic heartland!

  • Where to begin: by “white”, this racist asshat means Northern European. In spewing his ahistorical fantasy, he is despicably ignorant of actual history. Western civilization has its origins in the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Before the Renaissance, for many centuries in the Dark Ages, the wisdom and learning of the ancients was appreciated and preserved in the Islamic civilizatian. This arrogant twit does not have a clue, but that doesn’t stop him from pontificating as if he were the font of all wisdom. We need to dump the GOP on the trash heap of history where it rightfully belongs. We need to stop allowing the rich and powerful to siphon off all the wealth, thus allowing them to maintain political dominance, and we need to once again be a nation that invests in all its people and in the future – starting with education. King’s rant should turn the stomach of any moderately well-educated person.

  • As a well educated Iowan, I am disgusted by this fascist view of world history. Mr. King has no clue. While the “white European peoples” were huddling in caves, the Egyptians, the Phoenicians Greeks, Chinese and other people of color were keeping knowledge alive. I can only pray that God will show what the truth really is.

  • I SWEAR ta Gawd, Iowa is a good place…east of Interstate 35… and excluding Dubuque and some other small towns. And maybe Waterloo …

  • Arabs gave us modernized medicine, science, astronomy, and mathematics and pulled us out of the dark ages. Actually saved white western culture.

  • I live in NW Iowa; my family, my friends, my co-workers, and I have long been horrified by this ridiculously stupid man and his racist rhetoric. We are embarrassed that he holds the seat, but please know that he does not “represent” all NW Iowans.

    • Bless your heart Beth he really needs to go! He is making the wonderful state of Iowa look bad!!!

  • If we are to put history into context, the first order of business is to dispel the notion of race. Singularity of humanity leads us back to East Africa where the rudiments of civilization were established. Contributions to science, math, and medicine transcends regional boundaries with most of those contributions emanating from a relative small group of innovators, irrespective of skin color.

  • Haki, you make a lot of sense. Perhaps, in order for racists to appreciate your words, such individual(s) must first appreciate humanity.Against the backdrop of so much distortion, lies, and denial expounding the truth may be untenable to so many. Fortunately, the fight back against “facilitated ignorance” is on its last legs. Let us pull together to bring into existence a world of compassion and empathy; it is the only choice for human survival.

  • Melanin changes as the sun become more distant. It is not a black race but the natures way to cover an organ who is dangerously exposed to sun rays. King, however, is just an ass.

  • King is an idiot but never the less is entitled to his opinion. I am sure contributors of other races made their mark long before the white man and their bogus christianity bull shit.

  • The reigning idiot of humanity resides in the heartland. Is this indicative of avoidance of information or is it a conscious cry proclaiming he is somebody. I am incline to believe his statements are a manifestation of the insecurity he feels. Understanding the origin of humans in Africa lays bare the claim he is exceptional. Perhaps, it is his sense of inferiority that fuels him.
