Whether Through Impeachment Or Vote, Trump Has To Go

Given the personality, the chaos, the drama, the lack of any understanding of presidential norms and the lying, I believe one must go back to Andrew Johnson to find a person in the oval office as unqualified and bad for the country as President Trump. Each of us has some idea as to what we want in a leader, especially the President. There are lots of things I would like to see, but the top three for me are kindness, humility and honesty. For this president, those three don’t even begin to make the list.

I am only one of dozens of writers to comment on this, but it needs to be said over and over again.

What I am even more disappointed in, even more then a bad and unqualified President, is Republican and Evangelical leadership, both who, for their own selfish self-serving interests, are ignoring it all.

I understand that the Daily Democrat is a partisan column, and I am a dyed in the wool Democrat, but if I lived in Arizona I could see myself voting for John McCain if he were to run again. Senator McCain and a few (very few) others call out President with impunity and practically all of them are not running again.

I do believe the President is (sadly) correct when he said during the elections that “I could shoot someone on 5th avenue and not lose any supporters.” What other president or even elected official would make such a terrible statement?

I watch the ads on TV put out by Tom Steyer promoting impeachment proceedings. In his ads he states that if Congress does nothing, the voters must replace elected officials with some one who will take action. I think he is correct. Personally, I believe no impeachment proceeding will move forward until after November and the midterms a little over 180 days from now.

I lived through Watergate and the impeachment proceedings of former President Clinton. Both became somewhat partisan affairs, but substantially less so then the current situation.

I have said over and over again, the only way a dramatic change will not happen in Congress is for the Democrats to screw it up. We could do that by staying home and not voting because our personal favorite lost in the primary, or candidates and their supporters lose their enthusiasm after the primaries.

Democracy can be a messy form of government, and it is up to each of us to do what we can to keep it working. If we fail, the end game will be disastrous. So to each of my Democrat and independent friends (and maybe even a few R’s), put country ahead of party and VOTE to end this mess. If we all do that simple thing it will work out.

  • One correction, Dick. It’s not dozens; it’s got to be in the hundreds by now.
Steyer is right. At this point, though, I’d let Mueller and his investigations proceed (and fer GAWD SAKE! protect his position!).
AND GOTV!!! Absolutely, Dick! That is key. Keep the “wave” going. Dems have something to be energized about this cycle. We MUST keep that energy flowing.
And for Congress – don’t even THINK about impeachment until Dems are in control of both Chambers. Until that happens, the PERCEIVED threat of impeachment gives the Marmelade Monster’s base the perfect impetus to “rise up in droves.” It is not an issue (yet) to run on. And there is a good chance that, if Congress does turn Blue-ish, the (not so) Great Pretender’s “agenda” can be blunted and thwarted until such time as Mueller is done with his work.

  • America finds it’s self at the crossroads, To vote for total corruption, total bigotry, total oligarchy, total surrender to the extreme evangelicals, the totality of accepting lying as the norm, or America can vote Blue for a better America.
