Zach Nunn Wins GOP Primary; Will Face Axne In The Fall

State Sen. Zach Nunn of Bondurant is the official Republican candidate for the US House of Representatives race for Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District.

Polls closed at 8 on Tuesday and NBC News and ABC News called it for Nunn. He defeated activists Nicole Hasso and Gary Leffler in the three-person primary.

Nunn will now against Democratic incumbent Rep. Cindy Axne, who was first elected in 2018.

Nunn has been endorsed by several colleagues in the Iowa legislature, Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Americans for Prosperity.

He says his top issues are the border and the military.

The Federal Election Commission’s most recent report showed Nunn had $223,290 on hand and raised $882,488 overall. Hasso raised $602,173 and the FEC report showed Leffler raised $0.

Axne has a significant edge with $2.8 million in cash on hand in the latest report, and nearly $4 million raised between Jan. 1, 2021 and May 18, 2022.

During the campaign, Nunn and his opponents focused most of their attention on Axne rather than each other. All three agreed on various issues including that abortion should be illegal without exception and that people arrested for the Jan. 6 insurrection have been unfairly treated.

Since 2019, Nunn has served in the Iowa Senate. Before that, from 2015-2019, he served in the Iowa House.

Before the legislature, Nunn served as an airborne intelligence officer in the US Air Force and served three deployments.

  • Should be an interesting race. Axne appeared publicly with Biden which was a huge tactical error considering his unpopularity and that inflation and gas prices are crushing the middle class. Cook Political Report has this race as “Lean Republican.”

  • Congresswoman Axne voted for every piece of legislation put forth by President Biden which supported Iowans during the pandemic and will continue in the form of infrastructure. Serious reservations about Nunn who having taken an oath to protect our country and democracy feel’s the insurrectionists were treated unfairly. There were 150 officers injured that day; speaks volumes to me where he is at. No thanks.
